Could Social Cognition Training Reduce Externalizing Behaviors and Social Maladjustment in Preschoolers?

چکیده
Background: Recently, a social cognition training model has been developed and showed significant improvements on social cognition, social adjustment and externalizing behaviors in typically developing preschoolers. Objectives: Such model has been replicated in the current study in preschoolers with externalizing behaviors to test whether deficits in social cognition could cause deficits in social adjustment and externalizing behaviors in preschoolers. The effects of training in social information processing and Theory of Mind on social cognition, on emotion regulation, on social adjustment and on externalizing behaviors were examined. Methodology: After a pre-test, 37 children with externalizing behaviors were allocated either to an experimental group, which received 15 sessions of social cognition training in groups of 3-4 children, or to a control group. Results and conclusion: Through regression analyses, the Theory of Mind indirect, social information processing, emotion regulation and social adjustment measures were significantly predicted by group condition. The hypothesis that difficulties in social adjustment can be caused by deficits in social cognition is discussed. *Corresponding author: Marine Houssa, Psychological Sciences Research Institute, Université catholique de Louvain, Place Cardinal Mercier, 10, 1348 Louvainla-Neuve, Belgium, Tel: 0032-10.47.46.88; E-mail: [email protected] Received January 28, 2016; Accepted February 22, 2016; Published February 29, 2016 Citation: Houssa M, Nader-Grosbois N (2016) Could Social Cognition Training Reduce Externalizing Behaviors and Social Maladjustment in Preschoolers? Prevention and Intervention for the Challenging Behaviors of Toddlers and Preschoolers
An early manifestation of atypical social-emotional development is the occurrence of challenging behaviors. While some challenging behaviors dissipate during and following the early years, others persist and even escalate, marking increasingly problematic developmental trajectories, school failure, and social maladjustment. Increasing attention has begun to focus on the early identification and...
متن کاملImpact of Short-term Training in Social Cognition in Preschoolers with Externalizing Behavior
In two experimental and exploratory studies, we wanted to test the differentiated effects on preschoolers with externalizing behavior (EB) of two short-term social information processing (SIP) and Theory of Mind (ToM) training sessions, in comparison with typically developing (TD) preschoolers or with preschoolers with EB whom didn‟t receive training. Firstly, nineteen preschoolers presenting a...

متن کاملIndividual differences in preschoolers' salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase reactivity: relations to temperament and maladjustment.
We examined the relations of 84 preschoolers' (43 boys; mean age=54 months) situational stress reactivity to their observed emotions and mothers' reports of temperament and adjustment. Salivary cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) were collected prior to, and following, a frustrating task. Children's anger, sadness, and positive affect were measured, and mothers reported on preschoolers' d...
متن کاملTesting the impact of a social skill training versus waiting list control group for the reduction of disruptive behaviors and stress among preschool children in child care: the study protocol for a cluster randomized trial
BACKGROUND Most preschoolers growing up in western industrialized countries receive child care services (CCS) during the day, while their parents are at work. Meta-analytic data suggest that CCS represent a stressful experience for preschoolers. This may be because preschoolers have not yet developed the social skills necessary to cope with the new and rapidly fluctuating social contexts of CCS...
